Enjoy Salvador sightseeing with any number of the tours available.

Salvador sightseeing is one pursuit that travellers that have already spent time in the area will heartily recommend. It is no wonder that Salvador sightseeing would be high on their recommendation list when you consider the natural beauty and the various heritage sights that are all held within 331 squared kilometres. However, sightseeing doesn’t just encompass that city, but also what’s nearby Salvador.

Any visitor has two options for Salvador sightseeing – take a tour with a reputable company or do it yourself! There are several reputable Salvador sightseeing companies in the area, including Tatur. Tatur (http://www.tatur.com.br or 071/3450-7216) has a range of tours of the local area on offer, including trips along the coast to the lighthouse and around Pelourinho. They incorporate the folklore and history as well as pointing out little known sights.

However, if you are planning on Salvador sightseeing without the help of a company then you should be aware that the city is largely pedestrian oriented. In more simple terms, the majority of the city is only accessible on foot because various roads are actually closed to cars. The centre of Pelourinho actually has no facilities for parking. If you want to get to Bahia beach, on the other hand, then it is far cheaper to get the regular buses there or alternatively a taxi. The taxis are very cheap at around $5 for the trip, and there always seems to be one around. However, there are rental cars in Salvador that can be hired for use for a week if you plan to take regular excursions in neighbouring areas.

Salvador sightseeing that incorporates what’s nearby Salvador can give individuals another option via a tour guide or via rental car. The destinations are the same, but you have the freedom exploring on your own that you cannot get via an organised tour. If you are going to explore the option of budget rent car then you will benefit from the peace of mind you get from renting in Salvador airport. All of the cars for hire there are certified and do not come with a health warning!

In terms of what’s nearby Salvador, you could drive to Cachoeira, a town 70 miles away from Salvador that embodies the essence of rural Brazilian life. It is sleepy and extremely relaxing, but you can enjoy the countryside and experience a different way of life. You could also take the highway to Morro de São Paulo on Tinharé Island. The snorkelling there provides a welcome distraction from urban life and allows you to experience a different side to Brazil. The beaches are wonderful for relaxing on, although if it is the natural world you are looking to experience in Brazil then you could also visit Praia do Forte. You can also snorkel there and swim in natural basins when the tide is low, but with an added bonus. The Tamar project in the area is designed to preserve the turtle in the area and thus actually allows you to swim with them and hold them. If it is also turtle hatching season, you can help the volunteers with that!

One final place that you should visit in the vicinity of Salvador is Itaunas. You will need to have hired rental cars in Salvador to get there, but will not need the car when you do! Itaunas offers a taste of traditional Brazilian living, with sandy streets that are pedestrian only. The village certainly has a nostalgic feel that allows you to escape modern life for a little while! You could also try out the traditional dance of the village, the Forro. It is similar to salsa and will really get you in the mood for a good time!

Whatever you choose to do as far as Salvador sightseeing is concerned, you will no doubt discover some of the hidden wonders of this part of the world, so sit back and enjoy!
