Salvador Dali! A short biography

Salvador Dali was a Spanish artist. He was born on May 11, 1904 in Catalonia, Spain. His full name was Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dali y Domenech. Other than being a surrealist artist he was an excellent sculptor, draughtsman, writer, illustrator, painter, photographer, jewellery designer, and film maker. Salvador Dali had amazing imagination and extravagant personality which made Salvador Dali an outstanding artist.

The amazing fact about artist Salvador Dali was that his work of art was inspired by the Renaissance masters and his paintings style improved drastically when he chose to paint surrealist pictures. He met other surrealist writers and artist who made him connect with his subconscious mind by going into hallucinatory states, a process which was described by him as paranoiac critical. His works even revolved around religious themes and he also went into the depths of erotica. Salvador Dali’s wife, Gala, was also his inspiration. 

Dali’s history is even more amazing than his artwork. After his quest with movies, he started designing theatre sets, doing interiors of extravagant shops. By then he had developed a flamboyant nature, which made him do things to attract people’s attention. He had great passion for oriental clothes and luxurious life. His trademark moustache was influenced by the painter Diego Velazquez. 

Art galleries of Salvador Dali consist of artworks which usually depict dreams. The objects were metamorphosed or deformed in a bizarre manner. Almost all his works had the background of a sunlit landscape. His most renowned work was The Persistence of Memory – 1931 also called Melting Clocks or Soft Watches, which had melting watches resting in a strange landscape. Dali’s other famous art work was Don Quixote – The Dreamer - 1971, Faust or Portrait of Marguerite - 1969, The Unicorn-1977, Basket of Bread-1926 and Petite Nus. He used certains symbols in most of his drawings like melting watches, elephant with sphindly legs, snail with a human head, locust, ants and egg, each depicted certain mood and emotion. 

The Long Island Museum has a collection of famous figures of the Surrealist movement like Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, etc. There is a profile of Dali on MySpace, where surreal art lovers can meet and have discussions. His wallpapers and pictures are available all over the web. EBay and Amazon have sellers who sell Salvador Dali’s artworks. There are websites which even have Dali’s time line, biographies and periodicals based on him and his work.
